World Fantasy Bound

We had to move heaven and Earth, part the seas, and in general completely undo ourselves in order to do it, but Cathy and I are on our way to the World Fantasy Convention. I’ve been charged with accepting for Leo, should he snag a statue in his own category. As for me, well…
I’ve gone from thinking I had an outside chance of winning to now thinking that I have virtually no chance of winning. The category I’m in, Special Award, Professional, is a catch-all: it can equally apply to an editor or a publisher, as well as anyone who writes a work of non-fiction. Sure, Clute won for his Encyclopedia of Fantasy, but in the last five to seven years, it’s been the publishers and editors who have walked away with the Gahan Wilson-designed bust of Lovecraft.
This year, my category is stacked with people who have all done good, noteworthy work, and in so doing, stand a greater chance of snagging the award, because they in fact did NOT write a biography. This makes me the dark horse, no doubt about it. Oh, well. I’m going to try and enjoy my rubbery banquet chicken (and forget how much it cost), and try to make the most of the trip.
I am on one panel, thanks to Darrell Schweitzer: The Author as Legend. 11:00 AM City Center C.
Moderated by Gary K. Wolfe and featuring George Scithers, Ben Peek, and myself. We’re going to talk about what happens when what’s known about an author overshadows his work. If I’m lucky, I’ll get to mention a certain Favorite Author.
After that panel, I will spend the remainder of the convention in the bar, schmoozing at Chris Roberson’s table and hobnobbing with the likes of Jess Nevins, Jay Lake, John Picacio, John Klima, and anyone else who stops by or wants to look at my little Lovecraft pin. It really is an honor just to be nominated.
With luck, I’ll have some stories to bring back for you faithful Cimmerian readers. Those of you who want to toast myself and Leo on Sunday night and wish us good luck, we do appreciate it. In the event of a win, I’ll try to get the word to my fellow bloggers so that we can scoop everyone else.
